Volunteer

I believe maps save lives. Whether it's routing emergency responders to flood victims in Nairobi, or helping health workers find girls at risk of FGM in rural Tanzania, putting communities on the map is one of the most direct ways geospatial skills can create real human impact.

FIG Young Surveyors Network: Virtual Community Surveyor Programme

International Federation of Surveyors (FIG YSN) and Crowd2Map Tanzania | November 2024

I was selected to participate in the FIG Young Surveyors Network Volunteer Community Surveyor Programme, a virtual volunteering initiative focused on mapping to empower communities and protect vulnerable people across Africa.

I joined a 48-hour intensive mapping session from 22 to 23 November 2024, contributing to mapping efforts in Tanzania as part of the Empowering and Protecting Girls in Rural Communities campaign. The goal: use mapping to help end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by making remote communities visible on the map, so health workers and NGOs can reach at-risk girls.

"I recently applied for a mapping volunteering program by FIG Young Surveyors Network (YSN) and got selected and participated in mapping for Tanzania to help end FGM from the 22nd to 23rd of November 2024. I am glad to have participated in the program and got to learn alongside the 48hrs and more. I also got to learn of the work that Crowd2Map Tanzania are doing in Tanzania through mapping."

What the programme involved:

  • Virtual remote mapping of rural Tanzanian communities using OpenStreetMap
  • Placing villages, roads, and landmarks on the map so health workers and NGOs can locate and reach at-risk girls
  • Collaboration with global volunteers and the Crowd2Map Tanzania team over 48 hours

African Women in Space Conference (AWiSC) 2025

Strathmore University, Nairobi | 27 to 28 November 2025

I served as a volunteer at the inaugural African Women in Space Conference (AWiSC), organised by Women in Space Kenya. The conference brought together women across Africa working in space sciences, geospatial technology, and policy, with a focus on gender inclusion in Africa's growing space ecosystem.

Volunteering at AWiSC connected me to a wider community of women advancing space and geospatial work on the continent, and reinforced my interest in how location-based science supports sustainable development.
